How to enter expressions and sets

Set operations and ways to write them
OperationHow to enter
complement (overline)~A ¬A !A A' not A · over an expression: ~(A ∪ B)
intersectionA ∩ B A & B A * B A and B
unionA ∪ B A | B A + B A or B
differenceA \ B A - B
symmetric differenceA Δ B A ^ B A xor B A ⊕ B
universe, empty setU 1 · ∅ {} 0
setsone capital Latin letter: A B C D … (except U)

Precedence from strongest to weakest: ‾ (complement), ∩, ∪, \, Δ; equal operations are applied left to right. For example, A ∩ B \ C reads as (A ∩ B) \ C, A ∪ B \ C as (A ∪ B) \ C, and A Δ B \ C as A Δ (B \ C).

Other sources may define precedence differently; where a notation without parentheses allows two readings, the app computes what was entered; use parentheses to fix the reading you need.

Set elements: numbers or words separated by commas or spaces, e.g. 1, 2, 3 or 1 2 3; a range 1..10 or 1-10; the empty set is ∅ or {}. All elements must belong to U; an empty field means the set is not given.
